Trade your antacid for apple cider vinegar

Say goodbye to heartburn

My husband is a big guy who has been given to bouts of indigestion, the kind that has gotten him up at night to down a couple antacids. He’d keep a bottle of the tablets by his bedside, and I was getting used to his crunching noises at night.
Frankly, chewing antacids every night meant the whole scenario wasn’t working. He decided to get more serious and added Prilosec, a Pfizer-made over the counter pill meant to be taken once a day. Spendy though it is, at $25 or more for a 10 day pack, you’re not supposed to take it for more than a couple weeks.
He muddled through and would go on and off the stuff, never able to stop the indigestion entirely.
Then, when I was dealing with a cough which I successfully treated with an apple cider vinegar mix with apple juice, water and honey, he tried some himself. That day, and the next day and the next day, he had no indigestion, and took nothing else to rid himself of it.
Hmmm, we wondered. Could there be a connection?
He simplified the mix by going to a glass of water with a tablespoon or so of apple cider vinegar daily. He’d also heard it was good for weight loss, something he’d be happy about, and lo, he was successful in battling the indigestion for a full two weeks.
Bottom line: Pfizer or the apple cider vinegar? At about $1.50 for a quart of apple cider vinegar, it won hands-down, and he has not had any problem since then.
He tried both unfiltered apple cider vinegar and the regular (clear) kind that is used for all kinds of things around the house. Both worked equally well.
So here’s the simple recipe for battling indigestion:
A glass of water (8 ounces) and two teaspoons to one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
It’s kind of tangy but he’s come to enjoy it. You can mix it into other things as well like tea, or juice, and the effect is still the same.
We’re not sure why it works, but here my favorite uses for apple cider vinegar:
  1. Weight loss: put it on salad or a dash in your soup to brighten up the flavor. Or drink a glass of water mixed with apple cider vinegar twice a day. I wanted to lose five pounds, and since trying it, I’ve been successful.
  2. Joint Pain: this is something I’ve seen disappear in myself, and my feeling is that it works by neutralizing yeast in the gut and diminishing “leaky gut syndrome” which will lead to joint pain, rashes, and all-around sluggishness.
  3. Shiny hair: My grandmother suggested that apple cider vinegar was a great way to make your hair shine because it cut through the buildup of rinses and other products on your hair. Also, if your local water is hard or has a lot of calcium in it, the vinegar effectively hanges the pH, so your hair washes more thoroughly. Don’t get the stuff in your eyes though – it hurts!
  4. Sinus and cough issues: The apple cider vinegar cuts through the phlegm and mucus in your throat as well or better than salt water gargles. Drink a hot tea of warm water, apple cider vinegar (two teaspoons) and a tablespoon of local honey, and it will cut the gunk in your throat for an hour or two. I think this is much better than taking cough syrups because it’s less expensive, there’s no prescription needed and there are no dulling side effects.
